Intelligent surveillance for newborns
Nicowl Inc. is a mission-driven medical device company based in Budapest, Hungary, focused on visual Developmental Care Technology, a developmental support that helps babies thrive, not just survive, and empowers medical professionals in neonatal intensive care units. The company is led by a multidisciplinary team of experienced clinicians, engineers, and medical device experts with deep backgrounds in neonatal care, biomedical engineering, and product development.
We are developing an intelligent, assistive 24/7 newborn surveillance system for complete NICUs — improving newborns' life prospects, providing visual security for professionals, and reducing hospital treatment costs. We help to detect infant stress triggers, repositioning need using automatic positioning assessment, analyze behavior patterns, and optimize sleep quality.
Developmental Care Technology
Developmental Care Technology (DCT) refers to the use of tools, systems, and methods, especially in neonatal (NICU) and child care, to support an infant's brain development, stability, and healing, focusing on creating a neuroprotective environment with features like protected sleep, pain management, and family involvement, using mobile devices for education to advanced monitoring and assistive tech. It bridges traditional care frameworks with digital and physical innovations to enhance outcomes for vulnerable infants and children.
Preterm infants should spend the majority of their time asleep. The regular alternation between sleep depths is thought to play a crucial role in brain development, and disrupted sleep has been associated with negative neurodevelopmental outcomes in both preterm human infants and animal studies.
Neonatal Intensive Care Units had no integrated medical device, software, or service for sleeping habits, comfort, and disruptive environmental hazard monitoring or skin-to-skin period monitoring during kangarooing.
Understanding this need, we are looking for Neonatal Intensive Care Units in the EU and the USA to team up in co-development, long-term R&D, pilot projects, whose goal is to improve their core KPIs:
the comfort and life prospects of babies, the prevention of permanent cognitive illnesses (learning difficulties, ADHD, ...), the provision of less stressful working conditions for caregivers, and reduce the length of stay.
We believe that we can help. We will soon provide the hardware, software, and service for 24/7 ward and department-wide, non-contact centralized surveillance, real-time behavior analysis, positioning assessment, and reporting.
Our value proposition
Here's what the professional say
“Several babies can be monitored at the same time, even in the dark. It measures light and noise levels, it would be unique.”
- PL neonatologist, Warsaw, 20 years of professional experience
"Great idea, concept. The baby can be observed even in the dark, you don't have to peek constantly.”
- CZ NICU nurse, Prague, 30 years of professional experience
"We constantly look at the babies, we also monitor them constantly at the nurse's desk, but we don't see what happens to them in 3 hours, unless we go there and look inside.”
- HU neonatologist, 10 years of professional experience
Neonatologist opinion summary:
"It would be very important to monitor it continuously, regardless of the time of day. In this regard, the movement parameters of the babies could be suitable prognostic factors regarding their neurological condition.
In addition to the fact that neural development is considered important, there is currently no tool for this."
Nurse opinion summary:
"It is crucial to monitor the development of the nervous system, a more accurate picture of the condition of the babies is available. However, it must be handled in its place, it cannot replace personal presence and it cannot cause a feeling of being watched."
